Chappaquiddick: Kennedy’s nightmare

0 Comments | Standard – Speaker; Hazleton, Pa., Aug 27, 2009

A left turn would have changed history, Vance Packard is convinced.

Packard, a 67-year-old retired museum curator who lives in Thornhurst, has vacationed for the last 50 years at Chappaquiddick Island, Mass., where Sen. Edward M. Kennedy crashed his car off the Dyke Bridge, leading to Forty Fort native Mary Jo Kopechne’s death.

The 28-year-old Kopechne was attending a party July 18, 1969, on the island in honor of her and other volunteers of Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Edward Kennedy offered to drive Kopechne back to her room in Edgartown at the end of the night, and planned to take the ferry back to Martha’s Vineyard, but took a wrong turn, according to testimony he gave later.

The car crashed off the side of the Dike Bridge during the drive. Kennedy escaped; Kopechne drowned in the car. It took Kennedy almost 10 hours to report the incident, and lead to a national scandal, which many observers say cost Kennedy a chance at the White House.

“Had he immediately taken a left leaving the house instead of a right, he would have gone the fast way to the ferry and not missed it,” Packard said. “People will go there today and look at the current bridge, which has stronger guardrails, and think you’d be hard pressed to run a tank off that, but the old bridge was this tiny dock, and would get filled with sand.”

Packard’s vacation home is about a mile from where the party was held and about 2 miles from the Dike Bridge. He worked to repair the old bridge one summer in the early 1960s, and remembers how the old guard rails served more as guides than protection.

“You could at least feel your way driving on that bridge if you slowly bumped into a guard rail,” Packard said, “because you couldn’t see the edge of the bridge.”

Kopechne was born July 26, 1940, in Forty Fort, the only child of insurance salesman Joseph Kopechne and his wife, Gwen. The family moved to New Jersey when she was an infant, and Kopechne attended the parochial schools there. She graduated from Caldwell College for Women and became interested in politics, and later worked on the Capitol Hill staff of Robert Kennedy

East Hempfield Twp. Eyes A Development Tool

0 Comments | Intelligencer Journal Lancaster New Era; Combined Saturday edition, Jun 28, 2010 | by David O’Connor

Staff Writer

Amid the maps, reports and other items of the planning world that fill Mark Stivers’ office, there’s a big bumper sticker that says a lot.

“It’s Not Farmland Without Farmers,” declares the sticker, affixed to a filing cabinet in the East Hempfield Township planning/ development director’s office.

Preserving farmland – while also helping farmers and builders – is the goal of a measure being considered by Stivers and other East Hempfield officials.

The measure is called “transferable development rights,” and it transfers development rights from farmland to land that’s being developed.

East Hempfield will hold a special meeting tonight to talk about the TDR measure, which is in place in several other local suburbs. The proposal will be discussed in a 6:30 p.m. session at the East Hempfield building, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville.

If there’s support for the measure, East Hempfield could have a TDR measure in place by year’s end.

But first, Stivers said, “we’d like to see a good cross-section of the township come out for this meeting – landowners, residents – and have everyone share their questions and concerns and really talk this through.

“It should be a great informational meeting for the public to attend,” because TDRs could play a role in what the township looks like in the future, he said.

TDRs save farms and allow for higher-density housing in developed regions, “and what we’re trying to get from that is development that can reduce the need for having to drive everywhere,” Stivers said.

“If we can put in (services) that people can walk to” and eliminate some of the need to drive, “it all helps,” he said.

This evening’s session is a special meeting of the ordinance steering committee, a panel that’s developing East Hempfield’s new zoning, subdivision and land-development laws.

Speakers will include Tom Daniels, head of Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board from 1989 to 1998 and now a professor at University of Pennsylvania

Pretty patios

0 Comments | Gloucestershire Echo, The, May 8, 2010

FACED with a blast of sunshine and a bare patio it’s all too easy to panic-buy the first cheap-and-cheerful garden furniture set you spy.

It’s a common summer error, but if you want a stylish hot spot rather than a dull space you should take as much care furnishing your outdoor area as you would your home. New materials, such as synthetic rattans, are ensuring that outdoor furniture needn’t fall foul of the elements, and there’s no limit to atmosphere enhancing elements.

Take the chill off cool evenings with fire-pits, make a space magical at night with lanterns, hang up wall art and windchimes, and you’ll be ready for a season of dining and lounging alfresco.

Living zone If you’re yearning to be an outdoor couch potato, the best choice is living-room style furniture – sofas, armchairs and coffee tables. “Match the tones of your outdoor furniture to the scheme in your home,” says Rob Fairhurst, managing director of Outdoor Chic.

“Where your window and doors meet the garden boundaries, view from both sides to work out how to make sure your interior and exterior space flow seamlessly together.” Try: A Chesterfield-style one or two seater Big Blo Blofield white armchair, from Pounds 335, from The Chelsea Gardener. Made from the sturdy waterproof material used for life-rafts, it takes a few minutes to electrically inflate or deflate. A modern Puerto Rico three-piece in weather-proof poly- rattan, L-shaped sofa, coffee table and armchair, Pounds 999, from Bhs. Patio poseurs If you’re planning a staycation – lounging, daydreaming and relaxing in your own back yard – the right kit is essential.

Day beds, swing seats, and loungers are indulgent ingredients for a ‘kick-off your shoes and get comfortable’ approach.

“In larger gardens, plan areas for use at different times of the day,” says Rob. “So an area which gets more shade in the middle of the day may be more comfortable as a dining spot than the patio which is in full sun then. Similarly, a bench positioned at the end of a garden could be ideal for evening drinks and catching the last rays of the sun.”

Try: A dark brown synthetic Malibu day-bed with canopy, Pounds 699 from Next.

A La Luna day bed, Pounds 1,499, in wheat-coloured synthetic wicker from John Lewis. It comes complete with drape and handy base drawer.

Pretty patios Capture the sultry atmosphere of a Mediterranean- style piazza with zingy-coloured furniture and accessories.

Revamp a wall or fence with exterior paint, and treat last year’s jaded furniture to new cushions.

Graham & Green has followed the fashion for ethnic-folk style with its brilliant collection of embroidered Gypsy Caravan cushions, Pounds 25 each.

Help lift the gloomy feeling of cloudy skies with bright blue, hot orange and pink floor cushions, Pounds 30 each from House of Fraser’s Linea collection.

Try: Cafe-style steel furniture, with cut-out floral pattern, in sky-blue, red or black, from Graham & Green. Table Pounds 45, set of two chairs, Pounds 56.

Pint-size patios Don’t cramp your style just because your space isn’t much bigger than a postage stamp. Space-saving, fold-up furniture sets are ideal for paved areas, balconies, or tiny back yards.

Make up for a lack of rolling acres with planted up pots and containers.

Next’s shiny silver embossed Word planters, are Pounds 45 for a set of two

Resentment is a form of

by admin on Jul.29, 2010, under Uncategorized

Resentment is a form of anger. This can be an extreme form of grievance. This grievance can be real or imagined. The fact that you resent means that it occupies your mind. This prevents clear thinking.

Life is short. Now when you hear this as a teen nothing seems further from the truth, especially if you are going through some hard times. However you will find as you get older, time goes by very quickly.

The point is this. When you resent something it is important to understand why? In resentment you are holding a grudge. This creates pain and anguish. When you hold a grudge you are living in the past, and consequently this will affect your future. Grudges such as these pervert your outlook on life.

Relationship is the essence of life. Without one another we are nothing. Harboring resentment will affect your relationships in the future. Harboring resentment forms into bitterness which will make you an unattractive person. Understanding why you have resentment is imperative. Resentment is a reaction normally caused by a personal challenge.

Deal with resentment and get over it. Move on in life if you do not, life will leave you behind.

Then again for no reason at

by admin on Jul.29, 2010, under Uncategorized

Then again for no reason at all, the entire house begins to crumble. Things around the house come crashing down as if she has hit a switch that controls high magnitude earthquakes. Once again what?s going on here and more importantly why – has got me in a right twist.
Maybe one day I shall have answers to my humble queries.

What has to be my favorite or should I say my anti-favorite recently though has to be the new Indica Diesel ad. You know the one that takes forever to setup and flashes you the actual product on sale so quickly that it seems like they almost don?t want to show it to you. Usually teasers are only 5 to 10 seconds long. What we have here is like a 50 second ad with a 45 second setup.

You might have enjoyed

by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

You might have enjoyed doing them once but could you, or would you want to keep on doing them.

My wife often says the meals I cook up at home for both of us and sometimes our adult children would go down really well in a restaurant and I could charge top whack. Although I really enjoy cooking like this (I do a really good chili-con-carne) I would not even think about doing it every night for dozens of people.

Let me illustrate this further by taking a square box.

Divide this box into four by drawing a horizontal line across the middle and a vertical line up through the middle. The horizontal line we’re going to call

“Enjoy Doing”

with a scale running from left to right.

If strength stays the same,

by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

If strength stays the same, take another day off before your next bodybuilding workout session.

Your goal should be to become stronger with each subsequent workout. Get into the gym, stimulate growth, and then get the hell out of the gym to go home and grow.

Therefore, rest is the most neglected principle in the bodybuilding universe. Think more is not better. Higher intensity plus optimal rest equals muscle growth.

Please don’t make this critical mistake, rest is by far the most important bodybuilding tip I can share with you. Follow it to obtain maximum muscle growth quickly.

That is almost

by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

That is almost two-thirds of the population. If you think that a figure like that and the skyrocketing sales of prescription anti-depressants aren’t related, you now have a second opportunity to stop reading this article and continue on with your day.

Here is the bottom line, folks: Exercise and a reasonable nutrition program are necessary for ALL people, for their ENTIRE lives. Note, however, that I said “exercise”, and that I also said “reasonable nutrition program”. At no point did I say anything about spending 2 hours per day at the gym, or about eating nothing but carrots and celery for the rest of your life. Why? Those practices are just as ineffective at long-term weight loss as diet pills and late night infomercial products. Here is what DOES work:

1) Weight/Resistance Training – Weight training for both men and women has the same effect – it makes your muscles more metabolically active.
